Fishing at Woolacombe Beach

Beach (surf beach)Devon🐾 Dogs allowed — with rules★★☆ family

Three miles of open Atlantic surf beach that fishes best well after dark once the bathers and surfers have gone, with the deeper water and better tidal cover on the northern (left) end near the rocks. The rocky fringes towards Barricane and Combesgate add lure and float marks either side of the main sand.

Tactics

Fish after dark to avoid bathers and surfers, favouring the northern (left) end of the beach at high water — the southern (right) end is shallow with a fast-running tide and fishes poorly. The rocky ledges around Barricane and Combesgate give lure and float marks when the main beach is quiet or too rough.

Best tide: 2 hours either side of high water, north end of the beach · Best time: After dark, dawn and dusk

Dogs

Woolacombe runs a three-zone dog system: Zone A (rocks at the north end down to the stream) bans dogs entirely from 1 April to 30 September; Zone B (stream to Mill Rock) requires leads over the same dates; Zone C (south of Mill Rock) has no restriction at any time of year. Outside 1 October–31 March the whole beach is dog-friendly.

Access & parking

Several pay-and-display car parks serve the beach directly off the seafront/Esplanade and along Marine Drive; the northern end near the rocks is reached via the Marine Drive car park. Sat-nav: EX34 7ZZ.Get directions → Family rating: ★★☆ — A long, flat, easily accessible sandy beach with lifeguard cover in season, but it's exposed Atlantic surf with a genuine rip current risk, and the best fishing happens after dark, so sensible supervision matters.

FAQs

Are dogs allowed on Woolacombe beach?

Depends where and when: banned at the north end (Zone A) and lead-only in the middle section (Zone B) from 1 April to 30 September, but the south end (Zone C) and the whole beach outside that season are unrestricted.

What's the best bait for bass at Woolacombe?

Lugworm fished on a beachcaster into the surf after dark is the classic approach, with crab and mackerel strip also working well.

Where's the best place to fish on Woolacombe beach?

The northern (left) end towards the rocks holds deeper water on the flood and outfishes the shallow, fast-tiding southern end.
