Tactics

The Street is a genuine low-water mark — check tide times carefully before walking out, since it floods from both sides on the push. Around the harbour, cast between the wooden groynes for school bass and flounder; the sandier ground towards Seasalter is better for dabs.

Best tide: Low water only — walk out and off well before the flood · Best time: Summer evenings for bass

Dogs

Canterbury City Council bans dogs from the beach level between Pier Avenue West and The Street, Tankerton, from 1 May to 30 September, with a lead required on the promenade above. Whitstable's beaches are dog friendly all year outside that stretch.

Access & parking

Park at the Harbour car park or Tankerton Road, then walk down onto the beach — the spit is reached on foot as the tide drops. Sat-nav: CT5 1AB.Get directions → Family rating: ★★☆ — Never walk out to The Street without checking tide times — it's cut off by the incoming tide from both sides and people do get caught out. Fine for confident kids on a dropping tide.
