An award-winning, mile-long flat sandy Blue Flag beach backed by 25 hectares of dunes and a nature conservation area, and one of the few NI beaches where vehicles can still drive/park on the sand.

Water quality: Excellent

Lifeguard: RNLI lifeguards in peak summer (listed among RNLI's Co. Down beaches alongside Murlough and Cranfield)

Hazards: Open Irish Sea strand; standard RNLI rip-current caution, stay within the lifeguarded area in season.

Dogs

Per the existing 'newcastle-co-down' mark's note: dogs restricted from the designated bathing area only, 10am-6pm, 1 June-15 September (a narrower restriction than Newcastle's beach-wide ban).

Family

Flat, wide, dune-backed sand plus (as of 23 June 2026) newly launched inclusive-beach access equipment make this one of the most accessible family beaches in the county.

Fishing

North-coast and County Down surf beaches can support bass, flatfish, dogfish, winter whiting and occasional rays.
