Fishing at Splash Point, Rhyl

Beach / groynesDenbighshire🐾 Seasonal daytime dog ban★★★ family

Splash Point sits at the quieter eastern end of Rhyl's two-mile beach, sand interspersed with wooden groynes and backed by a sea wall — flat ground that fishes far more comfortably on the push, two hours either side of high water, than on a long low-water walk.

What you can catch

SpeciesSeasonMethod
SmoothhoundMay–AugCrab or squid fished hard on the bottom at low water, when hounds move in close along this stretch.
BassApr–OctSingle-hook pulley rigs with long-shank hooks and lugworm or sandeel, fished on the flooding tide up the groynes.
Flounder / Plaice / DabYear-round, best Sep–DecTwo- or three-hook flapper rigs baited with lugworm or ragworm over the flat sand.
WhitingOct–FebMackerel or bluey strip fished hard on the bottom through the winter months.
CodlingNov–FebFresh fish bait fished after dark during rougher winter weather for the occasional codling.

Tactics

Fish two hours either side of high water for comfort — the beach is very flat, and a low-water session means a long walk out followed by being chased back up the sand by the flood. Lugworm is the confidence bait for everything; add crab or squid for the smoothhounds that move through May–August.

Best tide: 2 hours up to 2 hours down from high water · Best time: Summer low-water sessions for smoothhounds; winter evenings/after dark for whiting and codling

Denbighshire County Council's PSPO bans dogs from Rhyl beach between 1 May and 30 September, except in the designated exercise area running from the Kite Surf Café/Old Golf Road eastwards towards Ffrith Festival Gardens, Prestatyn (which covers the Splash Point stretch); dogs are allowed on the full beach outside these dates.

FAQs

Is Rhyl beach dog friendly?

What tide is best for fishing at Splash Point, Rhyl?

Two hours either side of high water — the beach is very flat and a low-water session means a long, exposed walk that the flood tide can cut off quickly.

Yes — smoothhounds are a regular catch on crab or squid fished at low water from May to August along this stretch of coast.
