Fishing at Porthcawl Breakwater

Breakwater / Harbour WallBridgend🐾 Dog-friendly all year★☆☆ family

A short walk from the town centre, Porthcawl's harbour breakwater fishes well right through the year and is one of the most convenient rock marks in South Wales — just don't fish it in a big swell, as waves regularly break clean over the top.

Tactics

Fish three to four hours either side of high water with standard beachcasting gear. Peeler crab and sandeel score best in summer for bass and rays; worm and squid baits take over for winter cod, with frozen mackerel/herring strips for whiting. Never fish the breakwater in a heavy swell — there are no railings and waves break over the top in rough weather.

Best tide: 3-4 hours either side of high water; avoid in heavy seas/large swell · Best time: Evening high tide for bass and conger; frosty settled nights for winter whiting and cod

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on the breakwater and harbour wall year-round, but Bridgend County Borough Council bans dogs (except assistance dogs) from the adjacent beach areas — including the beach running parallel to the breakwater and the harbour beach between the pier and Penpolion — from 1 May to 30 September inclusive.
