Tactics

Fish the flood tide and early ebb for the best mixed sport; float or spin for pollack and mackerel in summer, static bottom rigs with crab, worm or fish baits for wrasse, conger and dogfish over rougher ground.

Best tide: Flood tide through to early ebb · Best time: Summer evenings for mackerel/pollack; after dark for conger

Dogs

Holyhead Breakwater and Breakwater Country Park are not among Anglesey's designated bathing beaches and aren't covered by the council's seasonal dog-exclusion list (1 May–30 September at 7 named beaches: Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes Bay, Llanddwyn/Newborough, Llanddona, Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay). Dogs are welcome year-round, though there is no fencing along the lower path so keep dogs close to the edge.

Access & parking

Park at the Breakwater Country Park car park off the A5, then walk onto the breakwater itself. No fishing permit required. FAQs

Can you fish from the whole length of Holyhead Breakwater?

Yes, though the outer sections nearer the lighthouse tend to fish best due to deeper water and stronger tidal flow.

Is Holyhead Breakwater dog friendly?

Yes — it isn't one of Anglesey's seasonally dog-restricted beaches, so dogs can be walked there year-round, but keep them away from the unfenced edge.

How far is the walk to the end of Holyhead Breakwater?

Around 1.7 miles (2.7km) from the shore end to the outer end near the lighthouse.
