Fishing at Dungeness
Europe's largest shingle headland and one of the best deep-water beach marks in the country — the ground shelves steeply close in, producing cod, bass and rays for anglers willing to fish after dark.

Tactics
Dungeness shelves steeply, so distance isn't always king — the 'hot times' are three hours either side of low water, and darkness brings far more fish onto the beach than daylight. Galloways (north end) has the strongest reputation for cod in a hard winter; Denge Marsh (south) is known for sole. Big baits and 40lb+ snoods for cod; lighter traces for bass and sole.
Best tide: 3hrs either side of low water · Best time: After dark, especially the winter cod run

Access & parking
Park at the RSPB car park off the Dungeness Estate or in the layby near the Britannia pub and walk across the boards — never drive onto the shingle itself. Sat-nav: TN29 9NL.Get directions → Family rating: ★☆☆ — Not a beach for young kids — steep shingle, strong currents and no lifeguards. Better suited to older children who enjoy the lighthouse and nuclear power station scenery than paddling.
FAQs
Do I need a licence to fish at Dungeness?
No — shore sea fishing anywhere in the UK, Dungeness included, needs no rod licence. A licence is only required for freshwater fishing.
Is Dungeness dog friendly?
Yes, the open shingle has no seasonal dog restrictions and is walkable all year, though it's worth keeping dogs on a lead near the RSPB reserve boundary.
When do cod show at Dungeness?
The main run is October to February, best on a cold, settled spring tide after dark with big baits at range — Galloways at the north end has the strongest reputation.
