Tactics

Dungeness shelves steeply, so distance isn't always king — the 'hot times' are three hours either side of low water, and darkness brings far more fish onto the beach than daylight. Galloways (north end) has the strongest reputation for cod in a hard winter; Denge Marsh (south) is known for sole. Big baits and 40lb+ snoods for cod; lighter traces for bass and sole.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome off the lead on the open shingle all year round — there's no managed 'beach' here, just the headland. Keep dogs under control near the RSPB reserve boundary and away from other anglers' lines.

Park at the RSPB car park off the Dungeness Estate or in the layby near the Britannia pub and walk across the boards — never drive onto the shingle itself.
