Downhill Strand (Magilligan Downhill)

A dramatic long strand below Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne (National Trust), DAERA 'Excellent' rated — but with a specifically documented rip-current and estuary-current hazard shared with neighbouring Castlerock that matters for both swimmers and anglers.

Water quality: Excellent

Hazards: Local safety sources describe a large rip-current area when there is a big swell, and warn that people can be cut off roughly three hours either side of high tide between Downhill and Castlerock. No RNLI lifeguard cover confirmed for Downhill itself (Castlerock, next door, does have summer RNLI lifeguards).

Family

Spectacular scenery (Mussenden Temple on the cliff above) but this is a genuinely hazardous beach for swimming in places — good for a walk and paddle, needs real caution for anything beyond that.

Fishing

North-coast and County Down surf beaches can support bass, flatfish, dogfish, winter whiting and occasional rays.
