Castlerock Beach

A 1km beach between the Downhill sea cliffs and the River Bann estuary (the Barmouth), DAERA 'Excellent' rated, Blue Flag 2025, RNLI lifeguarded — but with genuine estuary current hazards at the eastern end that matter for both swimmers and anglers.

Lifeguard: RNLI Beach Lifeguards (season/hours not separately confirmed in sources checked — check RNLI's Castlerock Beach page for exact current-year dates)

Hazards: The Barmouth (Lower River Bann estuary) at the eastern end has strong tidal/river currents; local safety pages describe rip-current risk building with big swell and warn of being cut off roughly three hours either side of high tide between Downhill and Castlerock. Stay off the estuary mouth itself regardless of conditions.

Family

RNLI-lifeguarded and Blue Flag, with a train station right by the beach — but keep well clear of the Barmouth/river-mouth end at the east, which has genuinely dangerous currents unrelated to the lifeguard-patrolled main strand.

Fishing

North-coast and County Down surf beaches can support bass, flatfish, dogfish, winter whiting and occasional rays.
