Tactics

The South Pier only fishes near high water — there's no water at all around low tide. Get into the corner where the pier meets the beach if you can, since food washes around and concentrates there. Worm baits take the flatfish; fish baits work better for coalfish and whiting once the weather turns. The Marina tackle shop on the harbour stocks bait and gear.

Best tide: High water · Best time: Summer for mackerel and flatfish; winter for whiting and coalfish

Dogs

South Beach, between the southern face of the South Pier and the eastern face of Princess Mary Promenade Sea Wall, has a seasonal dog ban from 1 May to 1 October (effectively matching the wider East Riding 30 September end-date).
