Pier / HarbourCo. Down🐾 Dogs allowed — with rules★★★ family

An easy, sheltered Belfast Lough venue right in the middle of Bangor's seafront — good access and safe footing make it one of the best beginner and family piers in Co. Down, but watch for fast-ferry wake if fishing the outer pier at low water.

PollackApr–OctSpinners and lures worked along the pier wall edges and rock margins on the flood tide.
Wrasse (ballan/corkwing)May–SepRagworm fished under a float tight to the pier structure and harbour rock.
WhitingOct–JanBottom-fished lugworm or ragworm at range off the pier during the darker winter months.

Tactics

Fish feathers or a spinner off the pier head on the flood for mackerel and pollack in summer, switch to float-fished ragworm tight against the pier wall for wrasse, and go to bottom rigs with worm bait for winter whiting and coalfish. Keep well clear of the outer pier edge for 15–20 minutes after Belfast Lough ferries pass — their wake is a genuine hazard here.

Best tide: Flood tide through to high water · Best time: Dusk and after dark for winter whiting/coalfish; daytime is fine for summer mackerel and wrasse

Dogs

Bangor seafront and piers are a permanent 'dogs on lead' designated area under Ards and North Down Borough Council's Dogs on Leads Order 2013 — leads are required here year-round, not just in summer. (Note: this is distinct from the separate seasonal beach dog-control order at Ballyholme/Groomsport, 1 June–31 Aug, 11am–8pm, which does not apply to the pier itself.)

Access & parking

The pier sits right on Bangor's seafront/marina area, a short walk from the town centre. Parking is available at Bangor Marina car park on Quay Street or nearby seafront pay-and-display car parks; the pier itself is flat, wide and fully accessible on foot. Sat-nav: BT20 5ED.Get directions → Family rating: ★★★ — Solid pier surface, railings/walls in most spots, easy town-centre parking and toilets nearby — one of the safest and most accessible marks on this list for kids.

FAQs

Can you fish off Bangor Pier for free?

Yes, shore fishing from the public pier and harbour walls is unrestricted and free; no permit is needed for rod-and-line sea angling in Northern Ireland from public shore marks.

Do you need a boat to catch mackerel at Bangor?

No — mackerel run close to the pier head in Belfast Lough through summer and are readily caught on feathers cast from the pier itself.

Are dogs allowed on Bangor Pier?

Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead at all times — the seafront and piers are a permanent on-lead zone under council byelaw, enforced with fixed penalty notices.
